How to Make Your Own Macrame Purse: A Step-by-Step Guide

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Macrame Cord: Choose a sturdy and flexible cord, such as cotton or polyester, in the color of your choice. You’ll need about 100-150 yards, depending on the size of your purse.
  • Wooden or Metal Purse Handles: These will form the top structure of your purse.
  • Scissors: A sharp pair of scissors is essential for cutting your cords.
  • Measuring Tape or Ruler: To measure your cords accurately.
  • Fabric Lining (Optional): To line the inside of your purse for added durability and style.
  • Needle and Thread (Optional): For attaching the lining.

Step 1: Choose Your Design

Before you start, decide on the design of your macrame purse. There are many patterns available, from simple knots to intricate designs. If you’re a beginner, start with a basic design, such as square knots or half knots, and gradually work your way up to more complex patterns.

Step 2: Cut Your Cords

Measure and cut your macrame cords according to the size of your purse. A good rule of thumb is to cut your cords at least four times the desired length of your purse. For example, if you want a purse that is 10 inches long, cut your cords to 40 inches.

You’ll need several lengths of cord:

  • Main Cords: These will form the body of your purse. Cut 16-20 pieces.
  • Filler Cord: This cord runs through the center of your knots and adds structure to the purse. Cut one or two pieces.

Step 3: Attach Cords to the Purse Handles

Start by folding each main cord in half to create a loop at the center. Attach the looped end of each cord to the purse handle using a lark’s head knot. To do this, place the loop under the handle, then pull the loose ends through the loop and tighten. Repeat this step until all of your cords are attached to the handles.

Step 4: Begin Knotting

Now that your cords are attached to the handles, it’s time to start knotting. Depending on your chosen design, you’ll use different macrame knots to create the body of your purse. Here are a few common knots:

  • Square Knot: This is one of the most basic and versatile knots in macrame. To make a square knot, divide your cords into groups of four. Take the outer left cord and pass it over the two center cords and under the outer right cord. Then, take the outer right cord and pass it under the two center cords and through the loop created by the outer left cord. Pull tight. Repeat in the opposite direction to complete the square knot.

  • Half Knot: Similar to the square knot, but only knotted in one direction, creating a twist.

  • Double Half Hitch: Useful for creating diagonal or horizontal lines in your pattern.

Continue knotting in your chosen pattern until your purse reaches the desired length.

Step 5: Shape the Bottom of the Purse

To close the bottom of the purse, bring the cords together and tie a series of square knots or half knots to secure the ends. Make sure the bottom is tightly knotted to prevent anything from falling out. You can also create a decorative tassel with the remaining cords or trim them to a uniform length for a clean finish.

Step 6: Add a Lining (Optional)

If you want to add a fabric lining to your purse, now is the time. Cut a piece of fabric to fit the inside of your purse, leaving a small seam allowance. Fold the edges of the fabric over and sew them to create a clean edge. Then, hand-stitch the lining into place inside the purse using a needle and thread.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Once the body of your purse is complete, and the lining is in place (if using), it’s time to add any final touches. You might want to add a button, zipper, or magnetic clasp for closure. You can also embellish your purse with beads, charms, or other decorations to give it a personalized touch.

Step 8: Enjoy Your New Macrame Purse!

Congratulations! You’ve just made your very own macrame purse. Whether you use it as a stylish accessory or gift it to someone special, your handmade purse is a unique and beautiful piece that showcases your creativity and craftsmanship.
